North Eastern Railway (NER) is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways that was formed by merging the Oudh and Tirhut Railway, Assam Railway, and parts of the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway. Initially covering a vast region, it was bifurcated in 1958 to create the Northeast Frontier Railway. After a reorganization in 2002, NER now comprises three divisions: Varanasi, Lucknow, and Izzatnagar, spanning 3,402 route km and serving 486 stations. It plays a crucial role in passenger and freight movement across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and western Bihar, and connects to Nepal at several points. NER is known for its cultural connectivity and engineering marvels like river bridges.
